Hiking Double Falls Loop, Shenandoah National Park
It was blistering hot (93 degrees Fahrenheit), and I thought “now or never!” A person who plans would have started out much earlier in the morning, but I fly more by the seat of my pants. After doing some googling to get an idea of some potential hiking options I settled on the Double Falls Loop. In part my inspiration came from the “10 Must Do Hikes in Shenandoah National Park” posted Johnny Molloy in Virginia’s Travel Blog https://blog.virginia.org/2016/06/must-do-hikes/. I found this guide extremely helpful!
So, me being me, I started my 6.7 mile hike at 1:00pm in the afternoon. entering Shenandoah National Park at the South entrance on Skyline Drive. Deciding on Double Falls Loop was two-fold, first it held the promise of multiple waterfalls and I pushed myself a little (or a lot) to complete the loop. Let’s just say that sitting on the couch since February didn’t do me any favors.
To guide me on my hike, I relied on the Hiking Project App, the link to Double Falls Loop is found here: https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7027258/double-falls-loophttps://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7027258/double-falls-loop. If you aren’t familiar with the Hiking Project App, I do suggest checking it out. It’s a free download with useful features. I had no trouble using the GPS in my cell phone even when I had little to no service. Since I don’t hike all that often and find myself in very different areas it has helped me identify hikes I’m interested in and orient myself while on the trail.
Success!
Well my friends hiking Double Falls loop did not disappoint! After a lengthy descent, or so it seemed, I entered this serene location. With rocks flat enough and large enough to relax on I decided took a break and enjoyed the breeze and water of the falls.
The hike overall took about 4.5 hours but was well worth it! The sky opened up on my last 2 hours of the hike and I ended up soaked to the skin and glad to get back to the car. All in all I was happy with myself and the hike. I’ve included a few more shots from the trip below, let me know what you think! Until next time…I hope you are following your arrow too! -Amy B.
